How to Read a VIN

How to Read a VIN (Vehicle Identification Number)

A VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is a 17-character code that uniquely identifies every vehicle. It acts as a VIN decoder key, helping you understand a vehicle’s manufacturer, specifications, origin, and production details before buying or selling.

What Is a VIN?

A VIN is a standardized 17-character combination of letters and numbers assigned to every vehicle worldwide. It functions like a fingerprint for the vehicle and is used by manufacturers, governments, and safety organizations to identify vehicles and track recalls.

Each section of the VIN represents specific information such as the manufacturer, vehicle type, engine, model year, and production details.

VIN Structure Explained

A VIN is divided into three main sections:

WMI (Characters 1–3)
Identifies the manufacturer and country of origin.
VDS (Characters 4–9)
Describes the vehicle type, model, engine, and features.
VIS (Characters 10–17)
Shows the model year, assembly plant, and unique serial number.

How to Read Each VIN Character

  • 1st character: Country of origin
  • 2nd–3rd characters: Manufacturer
  • 4th–8th characters: Vehicle details (model, body type, engine)
  • 9th character: Check digit used for VIN validation
  • 10th character: Model year
  • 11th character: Assembly plant
  • 12th–17th characters: Unique production serial number
